On March 21st 2025, a ship operated by MSC lost several containers during a storm in the Atlantic Ocean, offshore Portugal. The MSC Houston V, flying the Portuguese flag, with a capacity of 4,432 TEU, was on the route from Piraeus (Greece) to Liverpool (UK), when it encountered strong seas and winds gusting up to 48 knots due to Storm Martinho when passing over the sea region near Headland St. Vincent. At least 15 containers were lost overboard or fell into the water when the vessel suffered a partial collapse of its container stack, with many other containers were either damaged or hung precariously on the right of the board. The 266-meter-long ship, built in 2010, was forced to make an emergency stop at Vigo port, Spain. Currently, the vessel is anchored and docked at Termavi quay, where port authorities are planning to safely relocate or handle the containers.
Port authorities reported that cranes have been transferred from the area, and mobile cranes will be deployed to ensure safety for both the port and the stevedores during the operation.
“For the time being, it is impossible to determine the time to complete this operation. Safety and logistics plans are being implemented. It is important that the ship has safely entered the port, without posing any risks to maritime industry, especially to fishing vessels due to its large size,” said Carlos Botana, Chairman of the Vigo Port Authority.
