U.S. Imposes 25% Tariff on Imported Medium- and Heavy-Duty Trucks

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that starting November 1, 2025, all medium- and heavy-duty trucks imported into the United States will be subject to a 25 percent tariff.
This major trade measure marks a new development in President Trump’s tariff policy, aimed at protecting domestic industries from what he describes as “unfair foreign competition.”
The announcement was made on Trump’s social media platform Truth Social, emphasizing that the tariff will apply to all relevant truck imports from other countries.

The decision follows an investigation by the U.S. Department of Commerce into “predatory trade practices” in truck imports. The Department noted that a small number of foreign suppliers dominate the U.S. truck import market through such practices, prompting the move to impose tariffs to protect domestic manufacturers such as PACCAR (owner of Peterbilt and Kenworth) and Daimler Truck’s Freightliner brand.
Before this announcement, trucks imported from Mexico that met the requirements of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) could enter the United States duty-free.
!!! Potential price increases ahead
The tariff decision has sparked controversy and concern within the U.S. automotive and logistics sectors, as it is expected to increase costs for truck buyers and affect industries that rely on such vehicles, including transportation, construction, and public services.
This new tariff comes on top of existing 50 percent tariffs on imported aluminum and steel, which have already raised production costs for American truck manufacturers.
Industry leaders expressed disappointment with the fragmented, sector-by-sector tariff approach and urged the administration to renegotiate trade agreements such as the USMCA to create a more stable and fair competitive environment.
Originally, the tariff was set to take effect on October 1, but the implementation date was delayed to November 1 following appeals from companies concerned about the policy’s potential impact.
