Bunny > News > Update on Cargo Activity at the Port of Houston, USA

In April 2025, the Port of Houston (USA) handled 387,478 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) across its public terminals, marking a 20% increase compared to April 2024 and setting a new record for April container volume throughput at the port.

A terminal is a functional area within the port, specially designed and constructed to facilitate the loading, unloading, storage, and transportation of goods. It serves as a hub for import-export operations, including receiving, sorting, handling, and transferring cargo between vessels and the port or vice versa.

Containerized imports increased by 21% and exports rose by 16% compared to April 2024, bringing the total loaded container volume to 316,543 TEUs — a 19% year-over-year increase. This growth follows the record-breaking performance in March 2025, pushing the cumulative container volume in the first four months of this year to 1,456,173 TEUs, up 4% from the same period last year.

Although refrigerated cargo accounts for only a small portion of the total volume, its imports surged by 46% in April 2025, aligning with the peak shipping season for citrus and other fruits. At the port’s multipurpose terminals, steel imports rose by 40% in April 2025 and 17% over the first four months compared to the previous year.

General cargo volume increased by 18% in the first four months of 2025 year-over-year. The total cargo throughput at all public facilities of the Port of Houston has increased by 3% this year, reaching 18,087,097 tons by the end of April 2025.

The Port of Houston Authority manages the port’s public terminals, which are part of a 50-mile-long complex of diverse public and private facilities in Houston, Texas. Established over a century ago, the Port Authority oversees eight public docks and terminals along the Houston Ship Channel, including two of the most efficient container terminals in the United States.
